October, 2000WE travelled in a dugout canoe through the rapids of the Moei River that marks the border of Thailand and Burma.Thick jungle shrouded the banks and all eyes scanned for Burmese troops. In the slow, barely manoeuvreable canoe we were sitting ducks had a soldier decided to take a pot shot at us.And we knew they were out there somewhere. The canoe was laden down with dry food and canned fish.On arrival at a KNLA base camp I spotted a child squatting near a small fire.He was just 10 years old, his name was Pa Law Meh, and two months earlier he had watched, terrified, as Burmese State Peace and Development troops kicked his father to death because he refused to give them one of his chickens. As SPDC troops killed his father in Yaw Bo village, in central Karen state, they screamed at his family members that they were nothing more than animals and deserved to die.Now the Karen child is going to be a soldier and kill Burmese troops. He made his way to a unit of Battalion 202 of the Karen National Liberation Army’s Fifth Brigade.Pa Law Meh hates the Burmese and his childhood has ended. His family does not know where his is, only that he has been gone for more than a month. He says he will not return home, he is not afraid of being shot and that KNLA soldiers are very brave.Pa Law Meh will soon be handed a gun, the newest generation of soldier in a long line of freedom fighters.ENDS

Burma: One Year After Cyclone NargisBurma: One Year After Cyclone NargisBasic freedoms for cyclone survivors are just as restricted as they were before the cyclone. Donors and friends of the military government, such as China, should press Burma’s generals to free activists like Zargana who helped the survivors.
Elaine Pearson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch(New York) - One year after the devastation of Cyclone Nargis, the Burmese military government should release all those imprisoned for independently providing humanitarian aid to victims for criticizing the government’s response, Human Rights Watch said today. On May 2, 2008, Cyclone Nargis struck Burma’s Irrawaddy Delta region, killing an estimated 140,000 people and severely affecting 2.4 million others.
In the immediate aftermath of the cyclone, the government was slow to mobilize aid efforts or allow international relief agencies access to the devastated region. Since then, it has unfairly tried and imprisoned at least 21 community aid workers who sought to help cyclone survivors, including Burma’s most famous comedian, Zargana.continue http://www.hrw.org/en/news/2009/04/30/burma-one-year-after-cyclone-repression-continues

The Burma Army assisted by its Karen ally militia, the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army has overrun the Karen National Liberation Army’s base camp of Wah Lay Kee.The KNLA base camp, home to its Sixth Brigade’s Battalion 201 and besieged since April 12, has been abandoned.Soldiers who had mounted a stoic defence turned their backs on home and walked away this afternoonThis evening, at about 5pm, soldiers of the SPDC and the DKBA, were picking through the significant encampment, trying to secure it.It was not a safe mission. The camp was left rigged to the hilt with explosive booby traps. The combined SPDC/DKBA force suffered heavy casualties today in its final approach - the KNLA had blanketed the camp’s perimeter with landmines and tripwires.“There were many casualties on the other side,” said KNLA Colonel Nerdah Mya.“We have abandoned the camp and everybody is safe, we will fight another day,” he said at 5.15pm.He said between 400 and 500 SPDC/DKBA soldiers took part in the final push to take the base camp.About 80 came from the Thai side, said Nerdah. He said the Thai Army was nearby, but stayed in Phadee, home to about 500 people who were evacuated yesterday as shells fell near their homes.“They were there, but they didn’t go into the forest,” he said. The KNLA was heavily outnumbered, with a skeleton force of 50 to 60 men finally departing the camp.“We will set up more camps, we will fight another 20 years if we have to,” said a determined Nerdah. The KNLA camp had been in trouble since June 30 last year, when an unexpected assault quickly overran the camp before dawn.Colonel Nerdah said he thought the DKBA and SPDC put such importance on Wah Lay Kee mainly because it was the headquarters of Sixth Brigade’s 201st battalion.“It is really a symbol, it’s not a big area,” he said.“We can build more camps like that, we have more camps.”Until last year Wah Lay Kee had never fallen to the Burmese and had been a secure base camp for many years. It was established when Nerdah’s late father, the General Bo Mya, loomed large in both the KNU and KNLA.It contained hardwood and bamboo buildings and had stood since 1988.KNU vice president David Thackrabaw, on hearing the news, said any position that was untenable should be left and then work should begin “behind the lines”.“It’s relatively easy to block approaches [from within Burma], but if they can get access to the Thai side it makes very difficult,” he said.ENDSThe Burma Army and its ally, the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, have lost a total of 10 soldiers in their push to take a Karen National Liberation Army base camp south of the border town of Mae Sot.
