Maungdaw: A bomb was found in Maungdaw’s largest cave, known as Taung Kong Gri, along the Buthidaung and Maungdaw motor road in western Burma on Monday before it could be detonated, said a police officer.
“A patrol police team found the bomb inside the cave at noon and a bomb expert defused it before it could detonate,” he said.
However, there is no information as to who planted the bomb inside the cave.
“We sent the bomb to military headquarters in Buthidaung for inspection. We do not know how or who planted the bomb in the cave,” the police officer said.
Local residents said a large number of riot police have been deployed near the cave in an effort to beef up security since the bomb was discovered. Local residents in Buthidaung and Maungdaw are now concerned about the town’s security.
In 2004, authorities recovered several bombs from key places in Maungdaw and placed suspicion for planting the bombs on Muslim insurgent groups in the region.
