2009 Padoh Mahn Sha Young Leader Award Goes To Saw Nyunt Win
The Phan Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2009 Padoh Mahn Sha Young Leader Award has been given to Saw Nyunt Win, a community health worker in Mutraw District, Karen State. He was nominated by the Karen Information Centre.
The Padoh Mahn Sha Young Leader Award is given annually by the Phan Foundation in memory of Padoh Mahn Sha Lah Phan, former General Secretary of the Karen National Union, who was assassinated by agents of Burma’s military dictatorship on 14th February 2008. Padoh Mahn Sha always encouraged and supported young people to help their people overcome oppression and poverty. The award comes with a $2,000 grant for the winner to continue their work.
32 year old Saw Nyunt Win began helping sick people in his village when he was just 12 years old. For 20 years he has worked to help his people. His commitment and enthusiasm is an inspiration to his people. He finds practical solutions to problems, working constructively with local communities and leaders, including building a local hospital. He even grows vegetables for his patients. He is a role model for young people, never tiring in his efforts to improve the situation of his people.
In nominating him, Karen Information Centre described how “He has no property and has nothing but the love of his people.”
“The Phan Foundation is pleased to be able to give the Padoh Mahn Sha Young Leader Award to Saw Nyunt Win,” said Zoya Phan, founder and Director of the Phan Foundation. “He is an inspiration, and shows that even in the most difficult situation much can be done if you have determination and commitment.”
“We had many nominations for this award and many people deserved to win, but sadly only one can. It is very encouraging to see there are many young leaders who are really working hard for our people and our country. This is indeed a great promise for the future in our struggle for the development and freedom for our people. My father always encouraged young people to take the lead in community work and to become good leaders. I am pleased that we have been able to give recognition to one of these unknown heroes”
